My snakehead hunting diary 7-10am May 29, 2015

I got up at 5am yesterday overly excited about my upcoming snakehead hunting trip and my record gar fish catch the day before - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F-7ujTK-Xo
I went fishing again at Roaches Run (next to the DC Reagan national airport) fished hard from 7-10am only in the lilly pad section hunting for snakeheads with my Helsinki shad 2.5" crank bait. No bites and nothing to show and brag about except this story - wish I caught it on camera.I cast and cast but nothing bites, so at 9:30 I switched to top water new popper surface crank bait I bought from Walmart. Second cast to the edge of the lily pads. As I was starting to retrieve my bait, Bang, suddenly a huge swirl caused by a big fish from beneath the surface. I jerked my rod thought to myself, finally a big bite from the fish. To my astonishment the fish got away. I am pretty sure he brushed past the popper instead of taking it. There is no way he can escape the deadly triple hooks had he bit the popper. But again, it could also be my novice use of popper resulted in missing my record snakehead catch. Here is why I tell you the story: he passed the bait and came straight at my boat on the surface. I had a very good and close look of the fish. Make no mistake it was a huge snakehead. It has to be over 10 pounds if not 15 pounds. Almost the size of my record catch of gar fish minus the long nose. Lol-the gar fish's nose was a good 12" long. I forgot to measure it to confirm my statement here. That will not be confirmed until we catch another gar again. See u on the water soon.
