Fountainhead regional park fishing outing

Today is the last day boat ramp to be opened for 2014 season at Fountainhead Regional Park. It will be closed for winter meetings months. We got to the park at 11:30 and started fishing right away. We didn't catch any fish, so we left at 2:30pm. The water temperature was 45 degrees and air temperature was 60 degrees. This is our third trip. Last trip we got skunked too. It was on Tuesday Veteran's day.

Four Mile Run fishing - carp fishing

Four Mile Run fishing - Today around 12:30pm I got to the Four Mile Run and a guy picked up 2 humongous carp fish. One is probably 10 pounds and the other 5 pounds at least.

a nice Mercury 200hp bass boat with 2 fishermen were also fishing in Four Mile Run river.

I got skunked today. No bass caught. Not sure if the Alexandria VA treatment plant was emitting warm water? I don't think so but no sure. Temperature may have risen to 50 degrees but it go cold really quickly after a few hours. So, I quit at 3:30pm and finished my day.

Four Mile Run bass fishing at Alexandria VA 22305

I brought my canoe to the Four Mile Run, Alexandria VA 22305 for the very first time. Got there around 2pm and fished until 4pm. 2 guys were fishing at the shore. 1 guy asked me to get his crank bait that stuck on a piece of rag, but it was too deep so didn't get the lure and gave up.

Caught only 2 fish today, weather was sunny and temperature rise to 57 degrees, not cold at all. It was low tide, so most bass were not biting. I can see them swim around under my canoe. I can also see some Red color koi fish swimming around my canoe.

Repairing johnson 90hp outboard to mount on the stern of my boat

So, I started from April 19, 2014 to August 4, 2014 (my maiden voyage - first water test of the 40 years old boat made in 1974 and  32 years old motor made in 1982. I cannot tell you how happy I was when I first started the outboard motor after I bought it and after all the repair. The first boat launch was also a big success, the outboard performed well. I was almost up to 30 mile per hour speed, but I was too chicken to go any faster.

The followings are the things I repaired of the Johnson 90hp outboard motor:

1. The tilt tube was totally rusted and blocked. Instead of buying and replace the tilt tube, I simply use a long screw driver, 1/2" steel bar and hammer the rust out as a starter. I had to go to harbor freight and bought a 12" quick connect drill extension to extend my 5/8" spade drill bit into the tube to grind out the rust further, so my steering cable can fit through the tube smoothly. Watch the 4 parts video and see how I did it -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F6TKi396e4&list=PLpjSRCf07NBIHVIhjBjhXEfY91i0NlvBG

Johnson 90 hp outboard to replace Mercury 90hp outboard

So, I found a Johnson 90 hp outboard (1982 2 cycles 4 cylinders) to replace my Mercury 90 hp outboard (1987 2 cycles 3 cylinders). Johnson 90 hp is a lot heavier than the Mercury 90 hp. I heard the good old Johnson outboard is a work horse and very reliable. No fuel injection to foul cook the motor so just premix the oil and gas and off I go.

On Saturday April 19, 2014, I traveled to Kent Narrows MD - just over the 6 miles long bay bridge to get the outboard. The Johnson 90hp motor outboard was on a back of 24 feet long wooden crab boat. It was costing the crab fisherman $100 a day to cruise at 2 miles an hour of speed to troll along his trap lines. So, it is very uneconomical for him, so he wanted to sell the Johnson 90hp and replace it with a Yamaha 30 hp outboard to save gas.

This motor is perfect for my purpose (fishing and pleasure boating). I drive to a fixed spot and drop the anchor and fish or I drift and fish. So, gas consumptions is secondary consideration for me. I only need a reliable and start and go motor. This motor serves the purpose.

I met up with the seller (crab fisherman) at the Kent Narrows town pier and started compression test of the outboard motor. All 4 cylinders tested 110 psi, a very good sign but it was super dirty because he kept in the saltwater at the dock all winter. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_aeKsL6xrs&list=PLpjSRCf07NBJa_ciJWPWBjpw-p6QBh9ib&index=2

To my surprise and amazement is that the seller needs to remove the motor from the boat while it is in the water instead of getting the crab boat on a trailer and get the boat and motor out of the water.

So, we started to bring the boat to the open dock and tried to lift the 300 pounds motor of the back of his crab boat with a upside down L motor lift that he found out of his dad's shed. It was like a brand new lift and never been used or maybe used only once.

Seller was only able to find 1 screw and 3 nails, so he mounted/nailed the lift to the wooden dock beam. Lo and behold I was asked to start cranking the cable while he stepped on the lift. As the motor started to come up and almost away from the stern of the crab boat. The 300 pounds motor put a jolt to the lift as it shifted its dead weight from the stern to the lift and the seller and me. The nails popped and lift started to pull away from the dock, down goes the motor! Luckily the motor 2 protruding ends barely caught the stern again, so it didn't sink into the bottom of the ocean. Of course it would be the seller's loss but my loss is my precious time and gas. What a lucky day for both of us!

The seller drove to town and after about an hour. He returned with real screws so he re-mounted the lift again with real screws instead of nails. Voila, we finally got the motor out of the boat and into my truck. It was almost lunch time, so I decided to treat myself for a seafood lunch at the Harris Crab House to pat myself on the back for a job well done.

Not sure why, but I can tell you that day the crabs take super delicious after a mission impossible was accomplished by me and the seller.

Oh, I almost forgot to get the boat key from the seller before I drove over the bay bridge. I called him back after I got to the Harris Crab House before my lunch and luckily he was still at the dock. So, I drove back to get the key - a $100 saving there.

Four Mile Run bass fishing near Alexandria VA

I finally made it out to Four Mile Run bass fishing near Alexandria VA to do some winter bass fishing - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px4NLLibzUw. I parked in Pier 1 imports store's parking lot and went down to the river. Crossed over the rail under the bridge and Voila started fishing. It is easier to access the Four Mile Run river bank from the Toyota dealership, but you can not park there. So, you need to drive across the street to shopping center to park. Temperature was only 30 degrees, but I got there at 12:30pm and started fishing for only 5 minutes and landed my first bass. I continue to land 3 more. Very productive fishing than Roaches Run. Bait fish are jumping out of the surface. The sewer treatment plant certainly emit warmer water to attract all the fish from the Potomac river and Four Mile Run river to here. The fishing opportunity is abundant and plentiful. I heard the fish even came as far as Anacostia River from across the Potomac river. Hahaha - you can even catch Snakeheads here in winter and Nile Tilapia. It is so cool and amazing.

Canoe ceiling lift garage storage system install

I had to store away from 14 feet long canoe in my garage. So, I bought RAD easy bike hoist that can lift things up to 100 pounds. It came in 2 hoists. I installed one in April of 2013 to lift up my bike - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zamNHTBnNdM This month 2014, I finally have time to install the second hoist to lift up my 90 pounds canoe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B5LsHa7kSE It was a daunting task, because my canoe is much heavier than bike, but I was able to install it without any problem.

garmin 255w GPS - trouble shoot

Garmin 3.5" 255w stopped working last week. It stuck on the map loading forever. Cannot use it for driving direction any more. I hooked it up with usb cable to try to repair it, but my laptop would not recognize it. So, I twisted the cable end that connecting the GPS. Voila, the GPS started to react to the laptop and the connection to GPS was recognized immediately. I was able to fix my GPS from loading map forever. Uploaded the new map from Garmin Express and the GPS is as good as new.
