Roaches run fishing May 14, 2016. People continue to catch snakeheads between 26 inches and 35 inches in Roaches Run lake next to Reagan National airport. These fish live in the lily pad areas and very concentrated compared to Pohick bay or Dogue Creek and Hunting Creek in Riverside Park. It is fished heavily on weekends, You will have better luck in catching these trophy sport fish during the week. You need to keep changing lures to catch their interests, Almost everything works and almost nothing works. It can be very frustrating when you try to catch one of them here. But, rest assure when you cast over 100 times during your fishing trip you will be rewarded with a Frankenstein fish, you know you are in a sweet treat when you hook one in the lily pads, they have no where to go but jump out of the lily pads and into the air. You will have the fight of your life with the northern snakehead and one of its kind. The adrenaline will shoot through your body like nothing you felt before. So, good luck in catching your first northern snakehead fish, Tell your stories when you do catch one. Here is a picture of a skunk savior. You can always count on them to save your day.

Roaches Run fishing - May 1, 2016

We started fishing at 3pm and fished until 6pm. No other boats were out on the lake. Weather was kind of nice and started drizzling and cold. High tide was 4pm. Fish stopped biting for half an hour. We lost 2 big fish in the lily pads area. One took our crank bait with it. It was on a 6 pounds line - too weak for the snakeheads in the lily pads area. The Rebel crawfish crank bait was the killer for both Saturday and Sunday. Crawfish lure wobble nicely between lily pads at high tide (the water cover most of the lily pads). It attracts fish from beneath with and without the lily pads. We used 12 pounds line to get the bait out of the tangle from lily pads - a must in heavy cover and at Roaches Run for Big mama snakeheads. Yesterday we caught a 27 inches big mama snakehead. Tons of eggs when we severed her neck. We prevented between 40K and 100K eggs from hatching. The big mama was caught on the Rebel crawfish lure as well.

2 Snakeheads caught at Roaches Run by DC Reagan airport

We got to the Roaches Run around noon today, and found a big mama snakehead killed and left on the shore. We started fishing in the middle of the lake where fish were jumping. Low and behold we hooked up a big mama northern snakehead too on a very very small crawfish crank bait

We caught 1 Big mama snakehead and 3 bass including one 18 inches big large mouth bass today at Roaches Run using this crank bait. Take a look of the video for live action of the catch! We fished from 1pm to 5pm. High tide is 3pm. Cloudy day, no sun. Wind is 5 miles per hour very calm day. Our big mama catch is 26.5 inches. You need to catch a snakehead that is 30 inches or above in order to qualify for Maryland state snakehead catch award drawing of the Maryland Fishing Challenge. Best winter fishing in DC

I had a blast at Roaches Run Pentagon warm water discharge with this lure using drop shot technique. I have included all the components below for you to build the same gig. Just click them and you will be able to buy them from amazon. I used this gig and caught over 40 fish bass, bluegill.


The place is walkable in winter time for the George Washington Parkway parking lot. You can also cross over the fence of Boundary lane and Railroad track to get there from the ball field. here is a picture of my dropshot rig.

Roaches run fishing - Finally my first snakehead catch!!! - 1 of my 2016 resolutions accomplished.
Frankenstein fish is finally caught at Roaches Run by DC Reagan National airport. Lily pads is where they are hiding.
READ My 4 tips of catching the Frankenstein fish:
1. Stick with the lily pads shallow water for them.
2. Don't set the hook when you see something come to the surface for your lure, wait 2 seconds after they dive then set the hook.
3. Be patient and fish hard. you will be rewarded with the snakehead fish.
4. sight fishing for them-move and cast to where you see them jump.



They fight like a charging bull, and pull very very hard. Yes, it is fishermen's dream catch. Nothing even comes close to snakeheads. They come into Roaches run to spawn from Potomac river. I saw
some big mama snakeheads jumping out of the water. I think I caught the male small snakehead who was trying to fend off intruders so he can mate with the big mama snakehead. Law requires fishermen to kill them when we catch them, so sorry no mating for the snakehead I caught today. Big mama will stay laid eggs. I am sure there are still many other male snakeheads in the river.
